Jessica Kincaid, "November 2, 2012: Toasted Cheese", glass beads, thread. 11 x 16in. 2016

The works in "Jessica Kincaid • Teaching and Learning" on view in the Winter of 2016-17 at Plug Projects, draw on the artist’s experiences as a paraprofessional and an aide in Kansas public schools. The works are a reaction to a school policy requiring students to be served toasted cheese sandwiches. The intent of the policy is that they would relay news of overdue lunch account balances to their families.

Students and staff struggle to maintain a peaceful learning climate. The school day is tightly scheduled and stressful, but despite the learning climate, instrinsically rewarding.
